Reality

A well known saying states that love is blind. This can be true in the fact that people can fall in love with one another because of who they are inside, despite whether they find each other physically attractive or not. The idea follows that the more we fall for someone, the more attractive their outer appearance becomes to us.

It can also refer to the state many find themselves in, whereby any faults or negatives about another person are overlooked or unnoticed by their lover, because of their close proximity to the situation. Friends and family may see things more clearly, from their outsiders perspective, but we are blinded by love, which colours our judgement.

This is an old philosophical discussion; the idea that the insider has a limited view – for instance, a goldfish in a bowl cannot see the dimensions of its surroundings, but those outside the bowl have a very clear view.

What do we know about our surroundings, about our reality, that is not subjected to a human interpretation and bias?

Can we ever have a true, undistorted understanding of transcendental reality? Can we ever truly apply logic and reason and arrive at an unbiased conclusion? What do we perceive that is not coloured by our representation of them?

We are undoubtedly all in a goldfish bowl, but does the goldfish worry about what yesterday or tomorrow may bring?

The only thing we can be sure of is the now, this very second. This is where our life is, it is only ever where our lives are…that is the reality.
